How to Measure Your hat size

Hat sizes can be confusing; 7, 7 1/4, 7 1/2..huh? Before I got into hat making those numbers made zero sense to me. That’s because US hat sizes are calculated by taking the number of inches around the circumference of your head divided by 3.14 or pi (22 / 3.14=7). Oh yeah, pi, haven’t heard that since middle school. If you know your hat size, but want to find the circumference of your head in inches, then you’d take your hat size and multiple it by 3.14. ( 7 * 3.14=21.98 inches).

Ok, now that we’re all brushed up on our algebra, we can forget that. I just wanted you to understand what those funny numbers actually meant. Now that we’re all a bit smarter, let’s review an easier and more common sense way to measure your head. Can you guess it? Yes, that right! Let’s use the metric system like the rest of the world.

First, you’re going to need a tailor’s tape measure, those, soft, flexible ones. After you have that in hand, it’s helpful to have someone like a friend to help out, but it’s not necessary. A mirror will do just fine. Also, if you have a similar style hat, grab that too.

Items Needed:

  • Tailor’s Measuring Tape

  • Friend or Mirror

  • Similar Hat (optional)

Instructions

If you have a similar style hat start by putting it on your head and noting where you like it to sit. Note how far up from your eyebrows it sits, how far up from your ears it sits and around the back of your head, then follow the steps below, but place the tape where you’ve noted.

If you don’t have a hat, you will want to use your imagination and follow the steps below.

Steps

  1. Take the measuring tape and wrap it around the widest part of your head, a finger’s width above your ear and then where you would like it to sit according to your eyebrows.

  2. Write down the measurement in centimeters. This is where it’s helpful to have a friend double-check, but a mirror works too.

  3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you get the same measurement twice.

That’s it! You did it! Give this number to your hatter (hopefully that’s me) and you are good to go. Below is a conversion chart, so you know what it is in the US size too.
